Technological developments such as two dimensional electrophoresis [11, electroblotting of proteins [2], the introduction of the gas phase sequencer [3], and the introduction of polyvinylidenedifluoride (PVDF) membranes mark major advances of the last decade in protein characterization and isolation. The ability to sequence proteins that have been blotted onto PVDF membranes following their separation by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis [4] now makes it possible to obtain amino acid sequence data on minute amounts of protein without lengthy purification procedures.
